Luas drivers have described a plan to use buses to carry passengers during their strike on St Patrick’s Day as provocative and regrettable.

Divisional organiser Owen Reidy said it was also regrettable Transdev wouldn’t talk to drivers.

According to Transdev, the bus service will operate from Park and Ride stops into and out of Dublin city centre.

The service will run from 7.30am to 7pm and will be every ten minutes.

“When they come back into a reasonable space with their claim.in the same line as the other three grades”.

He added that the provision of services was a “matter for Transdev” but that he hopes the contingency buses will not be needed and that normal Luas services will be resumed by St Patrick’s Day.

Three groups of staff, ticket inspectors and their supervisors and control room staff, began talks at the Workplace Relations Commission this morning in a bid to end the dispute, after lodging more moderate pay claims.

The drivers are seeking pay rises of close to 30 per cent over five years.
