Daylight Saving Time Is Here, And California Wants Out
Bless it or curse it, Daylight Saving Time strikes again on Sunday, and citizens of 48 states must turn their clocks forward and sacrifice one hour of sleep to save energy through the summer.

Meanwhile, as more and more of our devices automatically adjust to the time change, there’s one manual task to consider: Fire departments across the country are asking residents to check the batteries in their smoke alarms tonight. He said in a statement that it’s time to “dispense with this failed Daylight Saving Time experiment”. A certain time of year rolls around and we magically get more daylight.
The sun sets over Alexandria, Egypt. The Brits brought daylight saving time to Egypt, but the country is now DST-free.
In addition, during the first week of DST (in March) there’s a spike in heart attacks, according to multiple studies over the last several years.
The start of daylight saving time is on Sunday, March 13 at 2:00 am (PST).
But we Michiganders must have wanted Daylight Saving Time. Almost 3,033 individuals who were hospitalized during the week after a daylight saving time transition were reviewed for incidence of stroke.
It wasn’t actually until the early 20th century that Englishman William Willett promoted it so more people could enjoy the sunlight, and his countrymen rejected the idea.
A 2014 Rasmussen poll found that a declining percentage of adults in the United States – 33% – think daylight saving time is “worth the hassle”. Those who already suffer from sleep disturbances may find they have further impaired concentration, performance and memory – and this may show up as early as the Monday morning right after the clocks change. “Of course we’re not getting more daylight, we just changed the clocks and forgot that we changed the clocks”.

If a Bay Area assemblyman’s bill passes, however, daylight saving tim and its annual spring-forward, fall-back ritual could become a thing of the past in California. Usually negative effects are highlighted during “spring forward” as we lose an hour of sleep, while positive effects are highlighted during “fall back” as we gain an hour of sleep. Others feel like they never catch up on sleep after the spring time change. The change in time can throw this system “out of whack” and can produce a jet lag-like syndrome-like we moved over one time zone for a period of months. Get ready for it to be a little bit dark if you’re early to rise and for it to still be light when you home from work, which will mean more time to get in those dog walkings and post-work jogs while the sun is still out.
