Nintendo shutting down Wii U TVii service in August
The remote control functionality linked to the user’s cable provider and the television on the GamePad will also not be affected, and a system update will merely take away the Nintendo TVii icon on the Home Screen and the Wii U Menu.

The announcement follows another Nintendo UK made earlier this year, noting Nintendo TVii would not be coming to Europe as originally planned, citing “the extremely complex nature of localising multiple television services across a diverse range of countries with varied licensing systems”. The service was a bit limited in its rollout as it only targeted the US, Canada, and Japan, which safe to say did not do much for its adoption. When you find a TV program worth watching, then the Gamepad’s IR blaster will send the signal to the set-up box to change the channel.
Tech companies love to announce major rounds of layoffs and service disruptions in the breezy hours at the end of a workweek, and Nintendo joined that proud tradition on Friday by nixing the weirdest service attached to its beleaguered Wii U console: Nintendo TVii. “At the same time, we will be closing the Nintendo TVii Miiverse community”.

So if you did enjoy using the service, you’ve got yourself pretty much until the 11th of August to keep enjoying it, after which it will just become a memory for you.
