Instagram tweaks feed order to show users preferred content

It’s similar to the approaches taken by Facebook and Twitter, the latter of which recently introduced a featured called “while you were away”, which displays content that a user may have missed while they were off doing other things. Instagram today announced what many already thought was happening: they will be modifying your feed to show you what they think you want to see, instead of a timeline of posts. Facebook Inc., which owns Instagram, has long used a complex formula to emphasize items it hopes will be “relevant” to each user, based on factors like whether the post came from a close friend or how the user responded to similar posts.
Instagram says that it’s making this move in part because its more than 400 million monthly active users miss an average of 70% of their feeds and it wants to make sure that they’ll always see the pictures “you will care about the most”.
Instagram has not said whether or not it will offer a setting for switching between a chronological feed and an algorithm-based feed.
“As Instagram has grown, it’s become harder to keep up with all the photos and videos people share”, the company said. “As we begin, we’re focusing on optimising the order – all the posts will still be there, just in a different order”.

Instagram thinks that the most of the users can’t see the content they interested at the time when opening the app. Because of that they spend more time in the app and that is a heavy-duty for the instagram to handle with. Twitter has also run into user complaints whenever it hints at changing its approach. Instagram did not mention whether the new feed will be an optional feature that allows users to opt out.
