Steve Wynn in Boston as rival pitches casino to regulators

Work that started in October 2015 halted after the challenge, but Wynn brushed aside Somerville’s concerns about traffic and air quality impact of the casino, saying he hopes it’s dealt with quickly at the state level and he’ll be able to break ground July 1.

Steve Wynn is still feeling pretty confident about his planned Everett casino despite a legal challenge from Somerville’s mayor that has served as the latest roadblock to its groundbreaking. He’s speaking at his company’s office in Medford. Wynn said he wished the tribe well but otherwise he “could care less about Taunton”.

During Monday’s meeting, Cromwell and the tribe’s lawyers addressed a federal lawsuit filed by Taunton residents challenging the federal government’s decision to award the tribe reservation land in the city. A $28 million Popeye sculpture – which Wynn says he purchased for the casino – will be in the lobby.

The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is updating state gambling regulators on its plans to build a resort casino south of Boston. There have been a number of changes made to the initial design of the casino project which is now expected to open during the first part of 2019.

His team estimated that it has dropped almost $300 million into the site to date, and has pushed the project’s $1.7 billion price tag now to $2 billion.

“This isn’t about competition, it’s about Wynn being a responsible neighbor”, Curtatone replied in a statement.

“Boston Mayor Marty Walsh on Wednesday night announced he’d reached a surrounding community agreement after engaging in direct talks with Wynn Resorts CEO Steve Wynn”.

Wynn said he met with area mayors and lawmakers to discuss his proposed Boston-area casino, tentatively titled the Wynn Boston Harbor.

Wynn calls the environmental appeal “an irritation”, but not a significant roadblock.
