Four Kashmiri students of Mewar University were arrested by the Chittorgarh police in the wee hours on Tuesday after supporters of some right wing organization accused them of eating beef in their hostel inside the university campus.
The students alleged that their rooms were ransacked and stones were thrown at them by students belonging to a particular community.
According to police, few students were cooking meat in room #201 of the newly-constructed hostel.
“They were questioned about their role in bringing the meat to the hostel and cooking it”, police said.
The latest incident took place on Monday at the Mewar University in the northern state of Rajasthan. “We have sent it for forensic testing just to be sure”, he said. The Kashmiri students were dragged out and thrashed when they were forced to open the door.
“We have students from all over the country…from 23 states”. There are around 800 students from Jammu and Kashmir in the university, which has a “no non-veg” policy. It is like a mini India.
Yesterday, home ministry sources clarified that its advisory had been misinterpreted after a report said that colleges in Kolkata have been asked to collate profiles of all students from Jammu and Kashmir. It claimed that the issue was blown out of proportion by some “fringe elements” and that such differences tend to rise among students as people from different walks of life and socio-cultural backgrounds study together.
