PlayStation VR will launch in October for NZ$629.95

And $399 is a lot cheaper than the $599 Oculus Rift and $799 HTC Vive. While we have already seen the form factor of Sony’s virtual reality headset, today the company will supposedly announce both a retail price as well as a launch date for Playstation VR. So this pretty much leaves the PlayStation VR, which last we heard we were reassured would not cost 0. Everyone is now eager to know the price of the PlayStation VR.

During a private event at this year’s GDC, Sony has announced the pricing for PlayStation VR, as well as a launch window. Instead, it will work with a standard PlayStation 4. In comparison, it’s going to cost you $1,500 or more for an Oculus Rift and a PC that supports its technology. The virtual reality headset will retail for £349 in the United Kingdom, €399 in Europe, and $399 in the US. This will be separate from the cinematic VR experience Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB first showed off in San Francisco earlier this week.

Noticeably absent are the PlayStation Camera and PlayStation Move controllers.

House took a moment to run down some of the numbers behind PlayStation VR.

One exclusive VR experience coming to the headset is Star Wars Battlefront VR, which will no doubt excite prospective buyers and Star Wars fans-alike.

Speaking specifically to the dev-friendly features of the device, House said Sony is partnering with Epic and Unity to make it easier for studios to build for the platform by supporting the use of Unreal Engine and Unity to develop PS VR content.
