PlayStation VR to debut in October for less than Rift, Vive

Last week PlayStation executive vice president Masayasu Ito has issued the most unexpected verdict of Sony’s upcoming virtual reality headset, all but admitting their competitor, Oculus Rift, will deliver better quality.

Sony announced the price and the release date of the Sony PlayStation VR at the GDC 2016. VR is expected to be a $30 billion market by 2020, according to tech advisor Digi-Capital. “The opportunity for developers is monumental”, House said, noting that 36 million PlayStation 4s, all of which can use PlayStation VR, have already been sold worldwide. As of now the details about Oculus and HTC Vive are not known, but they too are anticipated to be somewhere between 100 and 110 degrees.

Unfortunately Sony is leaving out one essential asset needed to play the PlayStation VR. At its launch, PlayStation VR will boast more than 50 games, with many more planned.

Hardware-wise, the final PlayStation VR features a 5.7-inch, 1920 x RGB x 1080 OLED display, a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and 360-degree positional tracking.

Those prices are in direct proportion to the quality of the virtual reality experience though, with Sony admitting that the other headsets are better.

The Facebook owned company has also introduced a bouquet of VR products including Oculus Ready PC.

Additionally, The Playroom VR, from the company’s Japan Studio, will be available as a free download from PlayStation Store for all PS VR owners at launch. By contrast, to run the PlayStation VR, consumers will just need to have a PlayStation 4, which starts at $350 new.

Sony say there are more than 230 developers now making games for the new headset.
