Past year there was her embarrassing and infuriating decision to join 46 Republican colleagues in signing the infamous open letter to the “Leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran”. He said that failing to do so “will not only be an abdication of the Senate’s constitutional duty, it will indicate a process for nominating and confirming judges that is beyond fix”.

Obama announced choice at a ceremony in the Rose Garden, with Democratic Senate leaders and allies looking on. In his current post, he is known for narrow, centrist opinions and rhetoric that is measured rather than inflammatory even when in dissent.

Garland was born and raised in the Chicago area, where he attended public schools and amassed a comic-book collection that he sold, Obama noted Wednesday, to help pay for law school. “Presidents do not stop working in the final year of their term”.

A spokesman for Hoeven said the senator was reserving judgment on that question, for now.
