IL voters head to polls Tuesday

In Piatt County in central IL, no election results were publicly available as of 11 p.m. and officials said they had been swamped by a huge turnout. Clinton won about as many in heavily Democratic Chicago, but her influence waned the farther from the city the voters were. In 2008, 2.35 million people voted in the Ohio Democratic primary, compared with about 1.6 million on Tuesday. But so are several IL races that will measure voters’ sentiments during a tumultuous time in the state’s government. After that, 55- to 64-year-olds make up almost 19 percent, while voters 18 to 24 are about 7 percent.

Jackson County Clerk Larry Reinhardt says it’s been steady at polling stations in Carbondale, Murphysboro and elsewhere.

Those numbers have even eclipsed the historic 2008 IL primary, when Barack Obama ran for president the first time. That would put turnout at about 30 percent. Cook County Clerk David Orr said this primary generated a record number of mail ballots and grace period registration, with a large number of young voters. But this year, Democrats are seeing their turnout figures fall off since 2008.

Sanders took a couple of photos with breakfast-goers during Tuesday morning’s stop at Lou Mitchell’s, a popular Chicago establishment.

“He has the most practical experience in governing”, he said.

Seven in 10 Democrats are satisfied with either former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Vermont Sen.

Cruz, who trails only Trump in delegates for the GOP nomination, was making five appearances on Monday, including Springfield, Decatur and Rockford. Trump’s heated language on immigration and minorities has angered voters like her. But another poll shows Clinton with 58 percent and Sanders with 45 percent, according to NBC News. “If you’re going to wait to register at one of those you have to go to the specific one that serves your address”.

Ahead of the contests, the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, a government watchdog group, teamed up with a Chicago information technology company to examine voter records and Census data over the last four elections, an analysis they say hasn’t been as easily accessible to the public before now.

In an election that could catapult the first woman into the Oval Office, 4 in 5 Democrats said gender did not play an important role in their decision – and just over half of them voted for Sanders.

Registering to vote is not on the top of anyone’s list of fun things to do.
