Cook County election officials have said they expect strong turnout for the primary, likely better than 43 percent. Anyone who did not mail their ballot by Monday should make plans to return it in person to the county board of elections before polls close Tuesday, according to Secretary of State Jon Husted.

This beats the 2008 primary’s record by roughly 60 percent.

As of 8:30 a.m., no major problems or wait times had been reported at area precincts, Carson said.

If you’re 17, but you’ll turn 18 by the general election in November, you’re eligible to vote in the IL primary.

Carson said additional voting machines and laptops used to check voters in were made available for precincts in anticipation of larger crowds.

Four judges were removed from polling stations Tuesday, Allen said. “Even wearing buttons or a T-shirt for a particular candidate is considered to be campaigning”, Chicago Board of Election Commissioners Chair Marisel Hernandez said.

The Kane County clerk’s office is reporting voter turnout of under 24 percent as of 4 p.m. That includes just over 7 percent of voters who cast early ballots, and just over 16 percent who had voted on Tuesday.
