PlayStation Vue finally rolls out nationwide

Sony is working on extending the standard PlayStation Vue service which includes those channels to more cities, but the Slim package will offer a stopgap until that time comes.

Sony’s streaming service, PlayStation Vue, is getting a nationwide launch today.

Sony’s service is now available in 203 markets across the United States with new “slim” bundles that are only available in the newly launched markets. CBS won’t be available at all at launch in new markets, but on-demand programming is expected to be added later.

Elite Slim: 100+ channels, featuring all the channels from Core Slim with the addition of more top movie and entertainment channels for $44.99 per month. That’s $10 cheaper than current packages, but it won’t include over-the-air channels, such as stations for ABC and Fox.

Vue’s new plans could make it a more significant challenger to traditional TV services.

Sony said yesterday its Internet-based television service aimed at luring consumers away from cable subscriptions was being expanded to the entire USA market. Sling TV’s service allows multiple streams for some, but not all, channels in its live TV lineup.

Consumers also have three packages from which to choose.

PlayStation Vue still stands out by offering Cloud DVR, along with simultaneous streaming and what it calls a “powerful interface”. Playstation Vue debuted in 2015 in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

PlayStation Vue is available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles, of course, but also on Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, iPhone, iPad, and Chromecast (via the iOS app). Subscribers can pay extra to receive standalone channels such as Showtime, Machinima and Fox Soccer Plus.

If a user lives in one of those seven areas, they will not be able to subscribe to any of the Slim packages, the head of product for the PlayStation Vue Dan Myers told CNet. Check out Pocket-lint’s PlayStation Vue guide for more on pricing and programming.
