United had enough chances to win – Van Gaal

United lost last week’s initial encounter with Juergen Klopp’s side 2-0 at Anfield.

Earlier this week news broke that we’d travel to Manchester a day early, on Wednesday, and stay in a hotel. Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne fouled Anthony Martial in the penalty area, with the Frenchman then stepping up and making no mistake from the spot.

The Reds did get their goal with the last kick of the half as Coutinho ghosted past Guillermo Varela too easily before classily dinking the ball over De Gea to restore his side’s two-goal aggregate lead.

Coutinho also talked his compatriot Roberto Firmino who has been in great form for the Anfield side since the start of the year.

The Merseyside giants dominated the game with eight shots on target.

Schweinsteiger posted the picture above on his personal Instagram account on Thursday afternoon and wrote: “We’ll give it our very best tonight at Old Trafford!” It left United requiring 3 second half goals, and they never even looked like getting one from open play.

However, overcoming a two-goal deficit is not an unattainable mission for the 20-time English champions.

As the final whistle approached Liverpool fans were jubilant, while United fans were probably on the trains and coaches home – probably still singing their vile songs.

The defeat put another dent on Van Gaal’s future at the club. “They have a lot of impact on the pitch”, Van Gaal said when asked about his expectations from his supporters.

“Since I have been here, this is the third time we play United and we have always been in the game”. “We owe the fans a big result because they are paying to see that and we have to deliver”.

“We made our position a little bit better (in the first leg)”.

“The way that we conceded that goal, at half-time they were all so disappointed”.

Juan Mata has three goals and five assists in his last nine games against Liverpool. Another game, another challenge for us and I think we’re ready. If we do our best it will be hard for Man United to enjoy the game.

There hasn’t been a goalless draw between United and Liverpool since the 2005/06 season.
