The male version of ‘curve’? Modeling agency spotlights plus-size men

The modeling agency has signed its first model, 26-year-old Zach Miko, to their plus-sized male division, Brawn. In the past, niche agencies have been dedicated to male models with bodies larger than standard, but this marks the first time one of the world’s foremost agencies has gotten in on the game.

Brawn’s first model, Zach Miko, offers an alternative to both types: At 6-foot-6, with a powerful physique and boy-next-door appeal, Miko looks more like a handsome stranger than an austere catwalk model-and in many ways, that’s the point. He’s previously modelled Target’s “Big And Tall” range, and stands tall at over 6ft (and with a 40 inch waist). What about the average Joes?

However, he emphasized that above all, “Brawn has a body positive message” – which makes it a welcome addition to an industry that’s slowly working toward more progressive ideals – or “a new era” as their Instagram puts it. Brawn is physical strength.

But even bearded, burly men often end up being translated into fashion as toned straight-size models, albeit with tattoos, man buns, and beards. I want all men to know that they are attractive and it is time to open up the conversation.

He follows in the footsteps of plus-size female model Ashley Graham, also signed under IMG, who recently appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue.

“I want every man in America to say, “I can do that” when they see Zach”, Bart said.

With plus-size ladies like Ashley Graham dominating the fashion and modeling industries, it certainly seems like body positivity is all the rage these days. “As we become a more visual society, with greater focus on selfies, and shared photos, men and boys are being impacted by expectations and aspirations about how they “should” look”, she says.

We have a feeling, with this new title, that there are many more egg whites and Taylor Swift sessions in Miko’s future to come.
