Suspect killed, 3 officers hurt in Chicago shootout

Guglielmi says the shootout occurred Monday night after officers observed a man and a woman acting suspiciously and made a decision to investigate. Dozens of police officers met the ambulances at the hospital. The officers may have been involved in an investigation of three people before the shooting incident.

The officers will be on routine administrative duties for 30 days, under a new policy that Escalante implemented to “ensure separation from field duties while training and fitness for duty requirements can be conducted”.

“Every day the dedicated men and women of the Chicago Police Department put themselves in danger so the rest of us can be safe”.

Three police officers are expected to survive after they were shot during a chase of a suspect on Chicago’s West side.

Guglielmi says the woman, who wasn’t immediately identified, was being questioned by investigators.

Escalante said Mayor Rahm Emanuel visited with the officers Monday night. One of the officers returned fire, fatally injuring the suspect. He was convicted of five felony charges, the latest being aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and resisting a peace officer, causing injury, in January 2012.

“Tonight we were reminded of the dangers that our police face, and the bravery that they routinely display”, the statement said.

The officers approached a man and a woman in the courtyard, and the man took off.

“I want to thank Chicago Fire Department paramedics for their quick response in getting our officers here safely”, he said. One officer was in serious-to-critical condition, a source said.

The injured officers have 10 to 12 years of experience, Escalante said late Monday at a press conference at Stroger Hospital, where the officers were being treated.

Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that the officers were taken to a hospital Monday night.

He hit one officer in the back, the second in the foot, and the third in the chest.
