“We believe that PlayStation VR is best poised to bring VR to the mainstream given the unparalleled VR experience we’re offering at a tremendous value, along with the strength of our ecosystem and the momentum of our brand”, House said. According to Sony, Cinematic Mode will support standard PS4 games plus videos and will allow users to view and enjoy 360 degrees photos and videos captured by omnidirectional devices. From the outside, the PSVR seems to be the most affordable dedicated VR peripheral out there, but its price of $399 isn’t exactly accurate, as users will have to purchase additional peripherals in order to actually play it.

Sony Entertainment is a virtual late comer to the Virtual Reality party, with both Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive expected for commercial availability by May. The VR headset marketplace has been getting more active in recent months as vendors have been introducing a wide range of new products aimed at VR fans.

Sony also said that The Playroom VR – a package of six games from Sony’s own Japan Studio – will be available as a free download to PS VR owners from launch.

For $500, gamers will be getting the full deal of PlayStation VR, which will include the headset, cables, stereo headphones, VR Demo Disc, camera, Move controllers, and the disc for VR Worlds.

There’ll be games for the PS4 version, with Sony saying that they think there’s going to be over 50 games available before this year is out, which is great news. If someone doesn’t own them already, [Sony] is selling a camera, a controller, and you’ve got the headset-we’re actually fairly similar in cost.

Now that all of the big three contenders in the VR space have announced price points and release dates, it will be interesting to see how things shake out, especially with as much $200 differences in price.
