Gary Neville ‘not closing door’ on idea of extending his Valencia stay

With Valencia now 12th in the league table and their Copa del Rey campaign having ended in the semi-finals, the Europa League would appear their only realistic route left if they are going to achieve success this term.

In the aftermath of the defeat, the coach refuted claims that he had used abusive words towards the referee, and stated how proud he was of his men’s performance against Athletic Club.

Under-fire Valencia coach Gary Neville was sent to the stands as his team were knocked out of the Europa League on away goals by Athletic Bilbao.

Valencia had been trailing 1-0 after last week’s first leg at San Mamés but looked to have turned the tie around when they went two goals up in the first half at the Mestalla.

“I’m not closing the door but we all know the contract that I was given”.

Jurgen Klopp’s side saw off old rivals Manchester United as a 1-1 second-leg draw at Old Trafford on Thursday saw them win their last-16 tie 3-1 on aggregate.

“I will work as hard as I possibly can. I will make sure that I give everything”.

While the visitors celebrate, a furious Neville remonstrated with officials over a handball in the build-up to the goal but only succeeded in getting himself dismissed for the tense finale.

The value in backing a road win and Athletic to progress at 7/4 and 11/5 is enhanced when one accounts for the fact that the Basques have won each of their last five consecutive matches in all competitions and their last three consecutive road games in the UEL.

And Neville said he felt his side had not always got what they deserved from games, adding: “You do need a bit of luck. Results are not what they should be for this club, and that’s something I’m very aware of”.

“The fans were right to criticise us on Sunday, but today they will be proud”.
