Pope Francis celebrated Palm Sunday not with triumphant cheerings of “Hosanna”, but in lament, decrying the European Union’s ill-handling of the refugee crisis.

Founded in 2010, Instagram has approximately 400 million users worldwide and shares just photos and videos with a community of followers.

The Pope and Systrom reportedly talked about the power of images to enhance togetherness across various cultures and languages. Pope Francis is taking this thing seriously.

Perhaps the pontiff, 79, was charmed by Instagram founder Kevin Systrom when the two met at the Vatican last month.

The Pope doesn’t post his own pictures.

It’s thought the Vatican is trying to engage with younger Catholics through the use of social media.

According to The New York Times, the Pope’s Instagram account will be curated, like his Twitter timelines, by the the Vatican’s social media department.

In the December following his inauguration, Francis drafted in U.S. communications consultancy McKinsey and Co to help him manage the church’s image and modernise its communications operations for a younger generation. “Your messages of humility, compassion and mercy will leave a lasting mark”, Systrom commented. As of this posting, his account already has over 300,000 followers.

Meanwhile, Francis and Vatican fans can keep in touch with papal news through the Vatican’s official Facebook and Instagram accounts.
