The LAPD is investigating a “very old” human skull found in L.A.’s Griffith Park on Saturday.

Frank Gonzalez said the two were hiking on the Bronson Canyon Trail around 2 p.m. when they found a partially covered human skull. Authorities said it appeared to have been there for a few years.

Detectives rappelled down about 100 yards to examine the skull and search for any other evidence, ABC7 reported.

Access to the park covering 6 ½ square miles in the eastern Santa Monica Mountain range is closed. The LAPD has not yet announced any new finding or commented whether the found skull could be related to the 2014 findings. It will take more than a week to determine how old it is and whether it is male or female.

The skull was close to where authorities discovered a decapitated head in 2012.
