Veteran bar owner offers advice for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations

In response to the extreme drunkenness of this feast day, William Spencer Reilly, a theatre and television producer, created the Sober St Patrick’s Day organisation in a bid to reclaim the “true spirit of the day” and honour Irish heritage. Later St. Patrick’s Society for Foreign Missions, dedicated on March 17, 1932, became one of many Catholic groups in Nigeria providing education both religious and secular.

Leprechauns: The tiny little men have nothing to do with Saint Patrick, but the “faeries” (yes technically they are fairies) are so closely associated with Irish folklore that they have become associated with the holiday.

“In Ireland it’s very much tradition of course to wear green, so he’ll wear something green to remember the day [and] we will all try and wear something green”.

The Tyneside Irish Centre pulled in the crowds with entertainment throughout the afternoon, while young Irish dancers showed off their moves in shows across the region.

St. Patricks day is here and the people of Helena have been embracing the holiday all day long. On St Patrick’s Day, which usually falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend the church service during the morning and celebrate in the afternoon.
