Browns still looking at RG3, not engaged in Kaepernick trade talks

The Browns were interested in drafting Griffin in 2012, but couldn’t work out a trade to move up as they were outbid by the Redskins.

Browns Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown, coach Hue Jackson and Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta met with a small group of Browns media here at the NFL Annual Meeting on Monday morning.

The Browns may not have a quarterback at the moment, but they appear to have at least settled in on a direction toward obtaining one. The Broncos are also in the running to trade for Kaepernick, and the 49ers could choose to keep him.

According to ProFootballTalk, the Browns are making calls about RGIII, a sign they are serious about the possibility of bringing him on board.

Griffin, a free agent, visited the Browns on Saturday, a league source confirmed to The Chronicle-Telegram. He was spectacular in his rookie season, throwing for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions and rushing for 815 yards and another seven scores, but injury issues and inconsistent play have marked his career since. “I think he’s obviously a tremendous talent and a great young man”.

The visit was considered due diligence as the Browns continue to explore options to improve at quarterback. But as we all know those things happen with players. “We are going to be very diligent in what we are doing – trying to make sure that we put the right quarterbacks on our football team and in that quarterback room”. The Browns released troubled former first-round pick Johnny Manziel earlier this month and the team now has Josh McCown, Austin Davis and Connor Shaw under contract for 2016. “That’s one of my biggest responsibilities and one of our organization’s biggest responsibilities”. The Browns are expected to take either California’s Jared Goff or North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz with the second pick in the draft, and both are receiving some high praise in the lead-up to the 2016 NFL Draft. It remains to be seen whether Griffin will end up in Cleveland four years later.
