On July 20 this year, the crowdfunding campaign was initiated, the date marking the 46th anniversary of the human arrival on the natural satellite of Earth.

The campaign is called Reboot the Suit, and Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum is asking for money to conserve, digitize and display the Apollo 11 spacesuit.
The Neil Armstrong “Reboot the Suit” campaign was always going to be a crowd pleaser – so, good on the org for raising awareness that it needs funds for some of its exhibits.
Armstrong’s suit is now being stored in a climate-controlled facility.
An appeal for half a million dollars to pay for an exhibition to display the spacesuit worn by Neil Armstrong on the Moon surpassed its target today.
As of Saturday, the campaign raised about $525,000. If the museum is able to raise $700,000 it will also digitize and preserve Alan Shepard’s spacesuit. Shepard made the first American manned space flight in 1961.
In typical Kickstarter form, those who donate to the project will walk away with a prize.
Now the Smithsonian is just slightly short of its $500,000 goal, with 25 days left in the crowdfunding process.

Equity Net wrote in blog post, “Supporters of the campaign are eligible to receive rewards for their tax deductible donations ranging from digital posters to tours of the Emil Buehler Conservation Lab at the [Smithsonian’s] Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA [at Dulles Airport] to see the suit in person”.
