On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said his chamber would not hold hearings, vote, or even meet with any nominee.
The White House said that after a two-week Senate recess, Garland will meet with the committee chairman, Sen. Obama announced his intention to nominate Garland on Wednesday.
“President Obama has done his job-selecting a nominee and sending that nominee to the Senate-and it’s time for the Senate to do its job”, Warren said. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), and Sen.
“I’ve seen up close, the devastation that can happen when someone abandons the justice system as a way of resolving grievances and instead takes matters into his own hands”, Garland said as he stood next to the President Wednesday.
“The Republicans absolutely should hold firm until the American electorate decides who the next President is going to be”.
Sen. Charles Grassley Senator Grassley at a news conference. Ayotte and Portman are among a half-dozen GOP senators in competitive re-election contests who Democrats hope will be pressured into backing hearings and a vote on Garland or be punished for their refusal by voters. “It will mean everything is subject to the most partisan of politics”. He says Garland is not a predictable vote on the court, which doesn’t please conservatives or liberals.
To be clear, McConnell’s argument against considering Garland now and the one the Senate majority leader might make to reverse course after November are unconvincing justifications for raw political calculation.
But Cochran continued to say the Supreme Court vacancy should remain open until the next president takes office.
“It’s unsafe to appoint somebody to the court with a 19-year track record”, said Napolitano, pointing out that such a long record gives opponents plenty of rulings to criticize.
Former federal prosecutor Conner Eldridge, the Democrat challenging Boozman this fall, criticized the incumbent for his stance and urged the Senate to consider Garland. Nineteen years ago he was also confirmed by the Republican-led senate 76 to 23 for the D.C. Court of Appeals.

King went on to criticize his colleagues in the Senate for “keeping their doors shut” to Garland, who he called a “very respected judge”. “It’s about the process”.
