Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s doctors are “very concerned” about the reappearance and progression of his cancer, his chief of staff said Monday.

The Ontario Medical Association describes palliative care as treatment that focuses on relief of pain and other symptoms which “creates a positive experience to replace suffering and pain in order to provide dignity at the end of life”. “The goal of palliative care is to deal with symptomatic issues, such as pain and discomfort, and physical and mental stress, and to allow the patient to be as comfortable as possible”.

His fight against cancer has drawn messages of support from a number of politicians and the public, including those who used to disagree with him in the past. The scandal vaulted Ford onto the stage of the outrageous, and despite the negative attention, he aimed for a second run as mayor.

Earlier in March, it was announced Ford would undergo an experimental cancer treatment in which researchers would inject tissue from his tumor into mice to test for the best courses of action. In November, his brother Doug Ford confirmed Rob had two tumours on his bladder. That initial diagnosis forced Ford to withdraw from Toronto’s 2014 mayoral election campaign.

In the wake of the developments involving the seriousness of his condition, supporters flooded a website with words of encouragement for the former mayor.
