John Stones would complete Chelsea squad, says Jose Mourinho

Cahill knows from his time with Stones in the England national set up exactly why manager Jose Mourinho is prepared to spend big to bring him to the club.

The Portuguese insisted Chelsea only want to make one more signing, if none of his key players are being bought.

“We made a bid, we can make it – it’s an open market until 1 September. I always speak with the players, but there is nothing to comment about”.

If asking Everton supporters what Stones is worth, many would argue that £50 million is the right amount, especially as this is what Chelsea received for David Luiz from PSG. The player could also more than triple his Everton wages of pounds 30,000 a week, though the deciding factor is that Chelsea can provide a clear career path for him. “It means we are trying to buy.” he added.

“One day when he stops, and I don’t think it will be next season, we have created already a situation for John to be replaced”.

Everton centre-back John Stones is “definitely interested” in securing a transfer to Premier League champions Chelsea.

Yet Chelsea boss Mourinho, who had previously said “it’s an open market until September 1st” is baffled by his rival’s anger.

Zoning in on Stones, Mourinho previously told Sky Sports News: “We made a bid, the bid is there and Everton have the power to accept it or refuse it”.

Mourinho said: ‘At the moment they say: “We don’t accept this bid”.

“You only pay it if you want”. You want continuity. You don’t suddenly need three or four signings who could potentially upset the applecart.

John was not misquoted last week but the timing of that quote being released by Everton was quite interesting because he actually spoke before the bid. One suspects Everton will look for an inflated offer from Chelsea before they do business.

Everton rejected this initial approach and the consensus is that a second offer of £26 million is being readied, which will be met with the same response.

“The other side is the disappointment in seeing a football club making such a statement in the press and making it so openly”.

In saying that, the offer of a significant pay increase at Chelsea may be enough to alter his thinking if Mourinho’s persists with his pursuit of a figure he views as a potential future replacement for captain John Terry.
