“Because we are a family, we will get through this together”, Blain-Bellamy said. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a Conway firetruck was backing up to the scene of the fire when a firefighter on the back came off the truck, then struck.

Officials scheduled an autopsy for Monday.

“Firefighter Ray was a husband, son and friend”, Chief Hendrick said.

“Pray with them, talk with them, support them, hopefully give them strength and some peace”, said Ortiz.

Lt. Brian Van Aernem with Horry County Rescue confirmed serious injuries at that time.

Ray, of the Green Sea community of Horry County, leaves behind a wife and two children ages 14 and 4. He had been a firefighter with the city since February 2010. The South Carolina Highway Patrol was investigating the incident.

“Please keep this family and the city of Conway in your prayers as we heal through this process”, said Blain-Bellamy. The help will continue through Ray’s funeral on Thursday. News13’s Lucas Lalonde is on the scene and says firefighters were embracing each other and visibly upset.
