Nintendo ending Wii U production later this year

Nintendo has been hinting at an NX reveal or announcement to come later this year, but it appears as though they might have bigger plans than simply pulling the curtain back on the upcoming console.

A report from Japanese outlet Nikkei claims that Nintendo is looking to end production of its Wii U gaming platform before the end of the year.

Nintendo struggled to popularize the Wii U, which launched in 2012, a year before the Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One.

The paper does not confirm that a replacement model for the Wii U would release this year, but it appears that it will be unveiled as Nintendo indicated previously. Its previous home console, Wii, went on to sell more than 100 million units. And with accessories also stopping production, even longtime owners might have some issues, if a new system isn’t on the horizon to replace their Wii U. This would certainly prove a strong incentive for Nintendo’s investment in its strong 2015 and 2016 first-party games, and would help provide the NX strong software at launch. But there has been no indication that Wii U sales are picking up, and with 3DS sales also lagging the company needs to make a move.
