UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Manchester United and Liverpool following disturbances during Thursday’s highly-charged Europa League tie.

Liverpool now go into the draw for the last eight – with a potential tie against Klopp’s old club Borussia Dortmund in the offing after they beat Tottenham 5-1 on aggregate. “We need to show that consistency in our performances and, if we can build on that first half [against Liverpool], we give ourselves a chance in the league and in the FA Cup”.

“We had to recover then and Liverpool have a week free – that’s a big difference and you could see that in the last 15 minutes”.

United were not able to fight back in the second half, as Liverpool secured their win in the first ever European meeting between the two clubs.

Police in Manchester confirmed five fans, 4 from Liverpool and one from United, were arrested for offences linked to the troubles. “We have done that with them”. “I was very proud of my players”. He also accused the current crop of United players of playing like a “bunch of strangers”. Why should I want the strongest team in the tournament in the next round? “When we got the ball though, and used the time, we had brilliant moments and created wonderful chances”.

“They got a penalty – it was a penalty – and Phil had a genius moment”, said the German.

United are sixth on the Premier League table, two behind fifth placed West Ham and four behind Manchester City who are fourth on the log.

“We take these matters seriously and can confirm that we have received a letter from UEFA relating to infringements at last night’s match which we will be reviewing”, confirmed a Liverpool spokesman.
