WTA Tour CEO assails ‘alarming’ criticism of female players

“The WTA stands on its own and was founded on the principles of equality and empowerment”. It’s clear that he has not tuned in to watch and get to know strong athletes who have dedicated their lives to developing a product that is entertaining, contains a wide range of skills and styles and is filled with genuinely wonderful personalities.

Several tennis organizations including the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the United States Tennis Association had also condemned Moore’s comments.

“Last year the women’s final at the US Open sold out well before the men”.

“Roland Garros has been and is this year again one of the top priorities of the season”, Djokovic said. In the event’s early days, he and fellow ex-player Charlie Pasarell started PM Sports Management, which oversaw the tournament as it expanded.

After all, Moore’s job is – or has been – to sell the sport and his event to sponsors seeking to win over female consumers. I think Venus [Williams], myself, a number of players have been – if I could tell you every day how many people say they don’t watch tennis unless they’re watching myself or my sister, I couldn’t even bring up that number. “They don’t make any decisions and they are lucky. They are very, very lucky”, he said.

Moore later apologized in a written statement.

“We had a women’s final today that reflects the strength of the players, especiallySerena and Victoria, and the entire WTA”. I am truly sorry for those remarks, and apologise to all the players and the WTA as a whole.

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka took advantage of an error-prone display by Serena Williams to win her second BNP Paribas Open title with a 6-4 6-4 victory in Sunday’s final at Indian Wells in California. Williams asked, rhetorically. “Or Rafa, or any man, play in that final …?”

“You know, there’s only one way to interpret that”.

“They have to go through a lot of different things that we don’t have to go through”, he said. I think there are a lot of women out there who … are very exciting to watch.

The sexism controversy brewed further when Novak Djokovic weighed in about equal prize money. It’s in business. We try to talk about the equality.

The 28-year-old Serb won in Indian Wells in 2008 and 2011 as well as 2014 and 2015.

While tennis player Djokovic acknowledged the foolish comments as “not politically correct”, he (much to our surprise) went on to say, even as he commends us and believes that we do “deserve respect and admiration” – the equivalent of pinching us on the cheek and referring to us as cute – he feels men deserve even more money, “because the stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men’s tennis matches”.
