U.S. vows to push for United Nations action on Iran despite Russian opposition
Dr Zarif was due to arrive in Australia today, where he was expected to meet with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and discuss a deal under which Iranian asylum seekers could be sent back to Iran.

IAEA chief Yukiya Amano says the agency can’t even publicly report any potential violations by Iran.
In January, the U.S. Treasury Department levied sanctions against 11 entities and individuals it said were working on behalf of the ballistic missile program.
Russia’s stance as a veto-wielding member of the council effectively ruled out the possibility of United Nations sanctions against Iran.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that if it was determined that Iran’s ballistic missile tests were in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, Tehran could face “some consequences”.
Diplomats appeared to agree that last week’s missile launch did not violate terms of a nuclear deal agreed between the world powers and Tehran in July.
“Once you have extremism in one corner of the world, extremist forces all over the world will be energized and will be motivated to breed insecurity and to provide breeding ground for further extremism”, Zarif said.
“The Australian Government has consistently urged Iran to progress human rights, both bilaterally and in relevant United Nations bodies”, Ms Bishop told ABC News.
The comment about Russian Federation was made by U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power and was a reference to Churkin, who said that Russian Federation did not view the tests as a violation of the resolution.
Perhaps the worst example of this reality is Iran’s latest missile tests-timed to coincide with United States Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Jerusalem and also with a spate of attacks on Jews on the streets in and around Jerusalem.
He said he would describe as “provocative” that missiles had “Israel must be wiped out” written on them in Hebrew.
UN Resolution 1929 stated that “Iran shall not undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles”.
“This is the only way to ensure that Iran does not continue to test more missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead”, he was quoted as saying.
Last week, Iranian state television showed footage of two Qadr missiles being launched from northern Iran, which the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said hit targets 1,400 km (870 miles) away.
NAN recalls that the council adopted seven resolutions in 2015, as part of global efforts to address Iran’s nuclear programme.
“We all need to cooperate together to fight ISIS [Daesh] and extremism, we have seen instances of that type of extremism… from Sydney to San Bernardino, and everywhere in-between”, he said.
