Mets’ Cespedes backs away, gives Astros inside-the-park HR
Yoenis Cespedes found out the hard way during spring training on Thursday that it’s OK to go ahead and field a ball harmlessly sitting underneath the outfield padding.

Yoenis Cespedes was awarded a brand new 3 year, $75 million extension from the New York Mets this offseason, a year after helping them reach the World Series. The ball rolled under the fence and Cespedes decided it was stuck.
Cespedes instead attempted to call time, all the while the ball was perfectly within reach of him.
The 240-pound batter was able to half-trot around the bases for the inside-the-park home run after the umpire ruined the game of hide and seek fans didn’t pay for. It’s not as if he the ball was lost under the ivy shrubs at Wrigley Field (a la 2015 NLCS).

Cespedes claimed the ball was unplayable, but one of the umpires came out and quickly ruled in favor of the Astros. But during spring training, there’s only so much effort he’s willing to put in. In 57 games with NY last season, Cespedes had 17 home runs and 44 RBIs.
