Superb Klopp celebration as Mignolet saves Southampton penalty, but Liverpool luck ends

In the 65th minute, Mane made amends for his miss by scoring a goal after being teed up beautifully by Pelle.

Liverpool, having survived an early penalty shout as Dejan Lovren seemed to bundle over Shane Long, turned on the style and should have been further ahead than the two-goal lead given to them courtesy of good finishes from Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge. But Mignolet dived the right way to deny Southampton getting back into the game.

Graziano Pelle then whipped in an equaliser seven minutes before the final whistle and moments later Mane snuck in behind and struck the victor.

While Southampton and Liverpool are not geographically linked in any way at all, this match has progressed into something of a grudge match of late in the Premier League.

In an interview with the official Liverpool FC site, our Welsh midfielder Joe Allen has called Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Southampton “hugely disappointing”, adding that there are “lessons to be learned”.

Klopp was growing increasingly animated on the touchline but his mood was eased when Southampton demonstrated they were equally vulnerable and gifted Liverpool the chance to take control of the game. The Slovakian had a performance to forget while at the other end Sturridge and Coutinho were quiet and substitute Christian Benteke was guilty of poor finishing.

But with Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez in inspired form, working his way back from injury, Liverpool fell to a heavy defeat.

However, Southampton certainly won’t make life easy for their visitors in this match.

MF James Ward-Prowse, 6 – Did not really do anything of note, but his introduction kick-started the comeback. But the referee waves play on, the defender certainly put his arm on the former West Brom man. The Brazilian picked up the ball down the left after Southampton lost possession in midfield, cut inside and beat Fraser Forster with a sublime long-range strike that curled low beyond the England goalkeeper.

Allen felt the decision to disallow his goal was key. Allen whirled away in celebration only to find that the goal was ruled out by the linesman for perceived interference from Mamadou Sakho.
