The Idaho Democratic Party delayed the scheduled start time by almost two hours for its busiest caucus site in Ada County after overwhelming lines of people in downtown Boise waited to get in.
Caucuses are public and favor political activists, and primaries are quick and private events.
“It’s the only way an individual can influence which candidate will be the nominee of the party”, Pacific County Democrats Chairwoman Karen Spackman said in February.
Hillary Clinton is back eight years later, facing a new insurgent: Sen.
Bernie Sanders, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president, overwhelmingly won Democrats Abroad’s Global Presidential Primary, according to a press release by the organization of registered Democrats living outside the US.
In addition to selecting a candidate, attendees in groups with more than 15 percent of the vote will select county-level delegates who will go to the state convention to support their chosen candidate. Because Arizona’s GOP primary is winner-take-all, Trump added the state’s 58 delegates to his tally.
Though the May 24 primary election is important in the Republican process, Washington Democrats assign their delegates for the convention based exclusively on the results of the caucuses. The lopsided support only increased in North Idaho College’s Boswell Hall, as many first-time caucus goers, young and old, packed into the seats among like-minded voters.
OLYMPIA – Tens of thousands of Democrats in Washington state will meet at schools, libraries and community centers at statewide caucuses this weekend to voice their preference for their party’s presidential nominee.
Sanders said he’s hopeful for success in New York’s April 19 primary, as well as California’s June 7 contest. But they are doing all they can to minimize a loss and to get as many delegates as they can even if they come up short in gaining a majority.
The caucuses, which fall on the same day as Democratic caucuses in Alaska and Hawaii, come almost a month after Super Tuesday.
It’s an important victory for Sanders, who was swept by Clinton in five states last Tuesday.
Clinton is still ahead nationwide, according to RCP, with a 9.6-point lead on Sanders. Clinton also had several state Democratic leaders assisting with her campaign in Idaho, signaling that much of the state’s Democratic establishment were ready to stand with Clinton on Tuesday.
Sanders returned to Washington on Thursday for rallies in Spokane and Yakima, and another rally is set for Friday in Seattle.
