Cities in southern Florida and Texas had better prepare for Zika this summer, according to a new study that outlines the places where the virus could spread during the hotter months. But Zika can cause babies of pregnant woman with the virus to be born with abnormally small heads, causing developmental issues and sometimes death.
Since February 1, she said World Health Organization has convened seven global meetings and published 15 documents that translate the latest research into interim practical guidance to support Latin American and Caribbean, as well as other, countries as they respond to the Zika outbreak and its neurological complications.
First discovered in Uganda in 1947, the Zika virus wasn’t thought to pose major health risks until previous year, when it became clear that it posed potentially devastating threats to pregnant women. Other uncertainties surround the incubation period of the virus and how Zika interacts with other viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes, such as dengue. Some of the identified cities have never seen the disease-carrying mosquito before, but it has already been observed along the U.S.-Mexico border and up the East Coast to NY. Though the man was discharged after 17 days in the ICU, he didn’t reach full cognitive recovery until day 38 of his infection.
Director of Tropical Public Health Services in Cairns, Dr Richard Gair, says preventive mosquito spraying is under way. It has spread rapidly in Brazil and the Americas, and is suspected of causing birth defects. She said Hawaii must take precautionary measures like reducing mosquito breeding sites to cut the state’s risk for an outbreak.
40 pregnant women are suspected of having the mosquito-borne virus.
They say he experienced Zika-related symptoms while traveling these past few months.
If you must travel, take strict steps to avoid mosquito bites by wearing protective clothing; treating clothing and gear with permethrin or purchasing permethrin- treated items and using insect repellents registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus often bite only at night.

In South Carolina, local governments are responsible for monitoring mosquito populations in their areas, DHEC said. Based off those traps, he said, it appears those mosquitoes live in eastern Kansas, where there are more trees and forested areas. On Friday, Skift – a travel intelligence media company – reported that “No One in the Cruise Industry Is Losing Sleep Over Zika”.
