Splatoon’s first major update is coming August 5

On 6 August, Nintendo will push live a software update that delivers a huge amount of new content to the game.

Read on for the announcement from Nintendo below. Teams don’t have to be even, which means the odds can be stacked against certain players, provided the host allows it.

The multiplayer-focused shooter’s new Squad Battle matchmaking mode will allow players to create a squad and play in Ranked Battle, instead of being paired with random teammates. Friends will always play together on the same team and battle against other squads at random. The mode allows two to eight friends to fight together in the map of their choice, as well as select which game mode and weapons will be available.

The level cap will also be increased, as players can reach level 50 now (from 20), as well as ranks S and S+ (from A+). These weapons have great range, and are capable of splatting opponents who are high up or on the other side of a wall. Meanwhile, the gatling – sorry, Splatling guns can be charged up, releasing a mega-powerful burst of ink. Players can charge these weapons to unleash considerable damage.

And what better way to show off your new prowess, arsenal, and fresh costumes (including leather jackets and, rather perversely, sushi chef costumes – think on that for a second) than by maxing out the massively increased level cap?

Despite its size and scope, this massive August update is not the end of the splat-acular free content coming to Splatoon.

More free content is planned for the rest of the summer and fall, including the upcoming Rainmaker ranked mode. More details about these additions will be revealed in the future.
