New Mexico health officials confirm first case of Zika virus in state
More than 100 cases of Zika virus have been confirmed in the United States, a new report finds.

The three new cases bring to four the total number of confirmed zika infections on the island. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case, according to a health department release.
Cuomo said the worst case scenario for NY is if the virus spreads widely in Puerto Rico and proves to be sexually transmitted. “Because of the preparatory steps we’ve taken previously, we are able to test more quickly and in-state”, Pino said.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – New York state will monitor and target a type of mosquito that officials fear could spread the Zikavirus, part of a new plan to combat the disease that also includes distributing prevention kits to pregnant women.
People who contract the Zika virus usually have no symptoms, but there are some who have reported sustaining fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. Meanwhile, the country is investigating an additional of more than 4,200 suspected microcephaly cases.
Florida has the mosquitoes known to spread the virus from person-to-person.
The cases of the disease that was reported in Cuba were from people who had traveled to places where Zika outbreaks are reported, particularly in Venezuela.
Draining standing water, he says, could help fight the transmission of not only the zika virus. There’s been mounting evidence linking Zika infection in pregnant women to a rare birth defect called microcephaly, in which a newborn’s head is smaller than normal and the brain may not have developed properly. That species is not present in NY, but the related albopictus, which might carry the virus, lives in the city and nine other counties and makes up 3-5% of the state’s mosquito population.
Sexual transmission of Zika virus from a male partner is also possible, so travelers are also encouraged to use condoms or not have sex.

“Zika is a minimal risk to New Mexicans at this time, unless they’re traveling to affected countries”, Landen said.
