Tensions spike as North Korea fires five short-range projectiles into the sea

The latest meeting comes even as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected his military’s test-fire of a new large-caliber multiple rocket launcher, North Korea’s KCNA news agency said Tuesday.

Conservative activists, including many North Korean defectors, have been carrying out leafleting exercises using giant helium balloons for years-a practice that infuriates Pyongyang which has threatened military strikes in response.

On March 21, North Korea fired five short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, the Pentagon confirmed.

Tensions have been soaring on the divided Korean peninsula since the North carried out its fourth nuclear test on January 6, followed a month later by a long-range rocket launch that was widely seen as a disguised ballistic missile test.

The U.S. special representative for North Korean policy, Sung Kim, who is visiting Seoul, said Monday that North Korea “should refrain from all provocative actions, including missile tests, which are clearly in violation of Security Council resolutions”.

The North has deployed short and medium-range missiles and test fired them, but has never flight-tested the KN-08 ICBM it is believed to be developing. The agreement came after China secured assurances the vessels would not use North Korean crews, a USA official said.
