Siachen avalanche: Lance Havildar Bhawan Tamang killed, another soldier missing

In yet another case of extreme conditions causing trouble to Indian soldiers stationed in Siachen, an army jawan went missing on Friday while another was injured after an avalanche struck a patrol party.

Indian Defence spokesperson in Srinagar, Colonel N N Joshi, told media that the avalanche hit the patrol party in Turtuk area of Siachen in Ladakh.

“Lance Havildar Bhawan Tamang, who was earlier rescued from an avalanche in Turtuk Sector succumbed to his injuries”.

Lance Havildar Bhawan Tamang was a resident of Lopshu village of West Bengal’s Darjeeling.

“The Indian Army fraternity stands shoulder to shoulder with the bereaved families in their hour of grief”, said Lt Gen DS Hooda, army commander, Northern Command expressing his condolences to the families.

Though a search was immediately launched by the Army, the missing soldier is still untraceable, said an official. One soldier has been rescued from the avalanche so far.

Jammu: Rescuers on Saturday found the body of Rifleman Sunil Rai who was buried in an avalanche in Ladakh yesterday.

Last week, a deadly avalanche struck the Siachen Glacier near the Line of Control (LoC) killing ten soldiers, including an officer. One of them Sujit was immediately rescued and is recovering in a military hospital. But he too died in Army’s Research and Referral Hospital, Delhi three days later.

The region is experiencing bad weather conditions for the past two days.
