Nature’s Variety, a company located in St. Louis, Missouri, has issued a nationwide recall of their Instinct Raw Chicken Formula dog foods due to possible Salmonella contamination.

No people or pets have become ill from the products to date, according to the company.

The formula bites will have a “best by” date of April 27th, 2016.

The recall began after routine testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of salmonella in the chub variety of Bravo Blend Chicken diet for dogs & cats.

Handling contaminated dog food may pose risk to humans, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after handling it or any surfaces exposed to it. Should signs of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping or fever occur, the company recommends consumers contact a doctor. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product. No other Nature’s Variety products are affected. Some pets can seem healthy but be carriers of the bacteria and can sicken other animals and people.

Consumers feeding the affected product should discontinue use and monitor their pet’s health, and contact their veterinarian if they have concerns.

If you have questions about the recall, you can call the company at 1-866-922-9222 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. eastern time.
