He then appears to strike Mr Tam on the head at least twice with an object before grabbing his bag and running away.
The robbery occurred on February 18 around 8:30 p.m. The victim was walking on Post Street, near Franklin Street, with his niece when an unknown male and female attacked the pair, according to police.
Eyewitnesses said there had been a scuffle between Mr Lam and one of the robbers as he attempted to hold onto a green bag containing personal belongings.
Police released a security video on Friday that showed Tam resisting the attacker and running into the street in front of a auto.
It contained his passport, money, mobile phone and bank cards. Tam’s niece was not injured during the attack, according to officials.
Mr Tam was understood to have left Manchester to pursue new opportunities in the States. “Please contact investigators if you were in the area near the time of the crime, observed any suspicious activity, or if you have any information regarding the identity of the suspects”, a San Francisco police spokesman said.
Mr Tam, an IT specialist, had recently moved to California to work as a freelance after 10 years working as a web content and digital marketing manager at Manchester University.
It’s understood he has family in the San Francisco area.
The man was black, aged in his 30s or 40s, muscular and about 5ft 10.
The female suspect is described as being in her late 20s, standing at 5 feet 4 inches tall with dreadlocks or braids flowing down her back with the top part in a pony tail.
