Razer acquires Android microconsole Ouya

The deal closed back on June 12, and it was Razer’s first-ever acquisition. As part of the move, Ouya’s technical and developer relations teams are joining Razer. The storefront could find a place on devices like the Forge TV, but it doesn’t seem likely there will be more Ouya hardware.

The company’s co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan says that the company has “a long-term vision for Android TV and Android-based TV consoles, such as the Xiaomi Michigan Box and Alibaba Tmall Box, to which OUYA already publishes”.

Ouya users will be encouraged towards Forge TV.

Razer’s plan is to allow Ouya users to merge their current games and accounts with Razer’s own microconsole platform and services. There’s no time frame for the relaunch, though Razer envisions it being a “premier destination” for Forge TV games and other content. As for the near future, Razer says it will soon provide existing OUYA users with a migration plan to its Forge TV console and Serval controller bundle. Razer also wants to offer “deep product discounts” for Ouya owners to purchase Razer hardware as well as promotions and giveaways to help make the transition to Forge easier.

Over the past year, Razer unveiled its Razer Forge TV, a high-performance Android TV micro-console to bring Android gaming into the living room, accompanied by a gaming controller, the Razer Serval.

In the wake of this acquisition, CEO and co-founder Julie Uhrman announced her resignation from the company via Twitter.
