That’s lower than the 16,000 deliveries analysts had expected for the quarter.

Demand is so high that it may be hard for Tesla to keep up with production – Mr Musk said the company is “definitely going to need to rethink production planning”. Reports circulating late previous year suggested Tesla had quickly ramped up Model X assembly to 800 units per week, representing 75 percent of the 2016 production target.

The figure is staggering and could represent both an evolution for Tesla TSLA, +3.40% and for electric cars.

Much of any additional cash raised this year will be needed for Tesla’s new US factories, as well as for further product development, Johnson said.

Tesla was forced to switch suppliers for the “Falcon” doors’ hinge mechanism when the original supplier couldn’t deliver, and journalists still noted issues with the doors at the Model X launch event last fall. To his credit, Elon Musk has admitted the company may have overreached when it came to designing and building the Model X. Musk is a person who does not accept that something can not be done.

Tesla took more than 276,000 orders for the Model 3 since it started accepting deposits of $1,000 from interested buyers.

The company stated that it delivered 12,420 units of the Model S in the first quarter, but only 2,400 units of the Model X over the same period. The parts comprise of half a dozen out of more than 8,000 unique parts, which affected delivery of cars.

In October, Tesla applied for licenses to sell and service its electric vehicles in MI, even though Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation in late 2014 that bans the company’s business model of directly selling cars to customers.

Tesla says it delivered 14,820 electric cars between the beginning of January and the end of March.

At the end of his speech Musk revealed that the Model 3, the fourth by the brand, was already a success – with the total number of orders surpassing 115,000 in 24 hours.
