Two Corning grads receive National Merit Scholarships

Nine Madison-area high school seniors have been named winners of National Merit Scholarships in the fourth and final listing of graduates awarded the scholarship heading into the 2015-16 school year.

Henderson was awarded the National Merit University of Florida Scholarship.

Patel, who is receiving a National Merit scholarship from Vanderbilt, plans to become a neurosurgeon, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation said in a news release.

Semifinalists then had to complete a detailed scholarship application, including an essay, description of leadership positions and school and community contributions. Semifinalists also had to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and earn SAT scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance. These distinguished high school graduates will receive scholarships for undergraduate study worth a total of more than $32 million. Smith has attended Lafayette High School. She played soccer for four years and was the captain of her team for two years.

Riverside High School Principal Peter Hliatzos said Bucholtz was a great all-around student who participated in a multitude of activities. Nielson’s scholarship will allow him to attend the University of Alabama, where he plans to major in chemical engineering.
