Zimmermann had problems navigating the streets that were closed off and detoured around Comerica Park due to construction on a light rail system and the Detroit Red Wings new home. Jacoby Ellsbury had the Yankees’ other hit.

DETROIT-The Yankees arrived here having scored 24 runs in their last two games, an outburst that launched them to near the top of the leaderboard in just about every relevant offensive category.

Unfortunately for the Yankees offense, their bats didn’t seem to come alone with them from the Bronx, as they were no match for new Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, as he was dominating in a 4-0 shut out victory over the Yankees.

Cessa, after striking out Justin Upton for his first career strikeout, was formally welcomed to the show by Miguel Cabrera, who took Cessa yard into the seats in right to further pad the lead.

With Zimmerman dealing, the Tigers struck again in the fourth.

The New York Yankees struggled to hit the ball Friday and the result was a strong performance on the mound went by the wayside in a 4-0 defeat at Detroit. In six games against him, Yankee hitters have a.280/.352/.399 slash line with three home runs. Miguel Cabrera got the party started with a quality at-bat, fighting off several pitches before nailing a liner to right, scoring Ian Kinsler from second base.

“I think for a lot of us, when you’re the visiting team on opening day, all the pageantry can kind of throw off your routine”, Yankees reliever Andrew Miller said.

Reliever Luis Cessa made his big-league debut. He was traded from Detroit to the Yankees in the offseason deal that sent Justin Wilson to the Tigers. In the seventh inning he drove a 3-1 pitch to deep right for his first home run of the year.

After Cessa settled down and pitched a scoreless eighth inning, the Yankees went down quietly in the ninth by Kyle Ryan to finish them off 4-0.

Severino went 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 11 starts last season, when he made his big league debut. He didn’t begin to slow his pace until the seventh when he walked Mark Teixeira and threw a wild pitch to the new backstop. Romine stayed in the game to play third and it was believed to be the first time in the majors he played against his brother Austin, catcher for the Yankees. He and Rodriguez were held out of the starting lineup not because of injuries but because of what manager Joe Girardi called the “quick turnaround” from Thursday’s home game against Houston. Tigers LF Cameron Maybin and RHP Alex Wilson are on minor league rehab assignments with Class A Lakeland, and are on target for a mid-April return to Detroit….

Instead the Yankees will turn to CC Sabathia, the former ace now fighting to maintain his spot in the rotation, to stop the streak.
