These have served to make the state’s Republicans organized and cohesive.

He faced a two-front battle, against Trump as well as Kasich, who tried to pick off a handful of delegates in friendly pockets of the state, including the university town of Madison.

“Absolutely huge win for Ted Cruz”.

Trump began primary day in Wisconsin with an addendum to a long-standing proposal: building an anti-migration wall along the U.S.-Mexican border, to be financed by the Mexican government itself.

But Clinton appears to have the advantage in the most important upcoming states.

The Cruz victory does come with some benefits that might linger.

But It’s the Republicans who are bracing for a real convention fight, which could occur if Trump can’t reach the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination through the normal voting process.

The Cruz victory increases the likelihood of a contested Republican convention in July. Cruz excels at party caucuses and conventions, which attract activists and those eager to promote the sort of staunch conservative ideology Cruz so passionately articulates. In several states, independents can vote.

To keep his streak going, Sanders will need to beat her out east – in NY on April 19, and then in some combination of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island and DE the following week. It’s Trump’s home state. The Ohio governor’s only victory has come in his home state, but he’s still picking up delegates that would otherwise help Trump inch closer to the nomination or help Cruz catch up.

The statement went on: “We have total confidence that Mr. Trump will go on to win in NY, where he holds a substantial lead in all the polls, and beyond”.

Complicating the primary landscape for both Cruz and Trump is Kasich’s continuing candidacy. Part of the reason for that was demographic: As Nate Cohn has written for The New York Times, Wisconsin’s high education levels, fairly high church attendance, and high concentration of white Protestants of northern European ancestry were all unfavorable to Trump. His most recent visit was to the Kohl Center Sunday. Cruz has 474, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich has 145.

Trump still has a narrow path to claim the nomination by the end of the primaries on June 7.

The real estate mogul could still win in the 3rd and 8th congressional districts, where he made final campaign stops on Monday. It was a bad night in the Democratic primary. 1,237 are needed to nominate. Cruz and Trump were also briefly about even early last week. Wisconsin’s Republican establishment, including Gov. Scott Walker, has also campaigned aggressively against the businessman.

Trump’s blowout loss was the nadir of a terrible week during which his campaign manager was charged with battery for yanking a female reporter, he was subjected to scathing interviews on right-wing talk radio, and he quickly reversed himself after declaring that women who get abortions should face punishment. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, for the Republican presidential nominee Tuesday. Cruz edged him out among voters without a college degree, according to exit polls. The conservative Club for Growth PAC also had a $1 million anti-Trump ad buy in the race. It helped elect Walker twice – and helped him survive a 2012 recall effort – and it counts House Speaker Paul Ryan and national GOP Chairman Reince Priebus in its ranks.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks to guests during a campaign stop at the La Crosse Center on April 4, 2016 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. One-quarter said the same of Cruz.

As Cruz spoke at the American Serb Hall on the edge of Milwaukee, good news kept rolling in from across the state: He led Trump by 53%-31% with 37% of precincts reporting.

The voters of Wisconsin answered the prayers of GOP leaders, resoundingly rejecting Donald Trump and keeping alive the party’s hopes of denying him a majority of
the delegates at the Cleveland convention. In a sign of Clinton’s low expectations in the Midwestern state, she spent Tuesday night at a fundraiser with top donors in New York City. So far, Mr Trump has won 48% of the delegates awarded. He would still need an estimated 500 to win the nomination.
