“If people who travel to affected areas, even if they don’t have symptoms were to use condoms as barrier protection for up to eight weeks after their return, that reduces the likelihood of sexual transmission”, Nesbitt said. A pregnant woman can pass the virus to her fetus during pregnancy. Just watch out for a fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes if you have been to a Zika-infected area and think you might have the Zika virus. This birth defect severely affects the head and brain development in unborn babies.

All but six of the 312 cases in the United States have occurred among people who traveled to Zika-affected countries primarily in Latin America, the Caribbean and some Pacific Islands, according to the CDC.

Meanwhile, researchers from Purdue University and the National Institutes of Health say they have identified the structure of the Zika virus, which lays the groundwork for further study, treatment and prevention efforts. Time noted that pregnant women should avoid countries with a great number of cases including Brazil, Haiti and now Fiji.

State health officials confirmed three more travel-related cases of Zika in New Jersey for a total of five, officials said Saturday.

Scarily, 40% were not aware that you can catch this virus from sexual transmission. They are also known to bite at night. Health officials stressed that there is no further risk of contracting the virus from the infected individual.

The Zika virus is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also spreads dengue fever. Doctors have monitored the relatives and friends of the two women but “did not detect any other cases”, of the virus.

In February of this year, Zika-spreading mosquitos were found infesting an area of Orange County, California. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new test to screen donated blood for Zika virus, which will help protect the nation’s blood supply, Nicole Lurie, M.D., assistant secretary for preparedness and response at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said during the summit.

Now there is no vaccine or specific medicine to treat the disease.

The degree to which weather conditions can favor populations of Aedes aegypti, which transmits the Zika virus, in 50 USA cities throughout the year.
