Moleskine’s New Smart Writing Set Uploads Your Doodles
In 2012 they took a step into the digital world by partnering with Evernote to create a notebook that could store your notes in the cloud.

The Moleskine Smart Writing Set includes a Pen+ smartpen, together with a Paper Tablet notebook that is shaped to represent a tablet device but instead of technology includes traditional pages for you to capture your sketches, notes and ideas. If you’re looking to give it a go, the Smart Writing Set will cost you $199 for the pen and the notebook. After all, if you want to do a drawing, using a mouse or a touchpad can be more time-consuming than just a few strokes of a pen. Moleskine calls the notebook a “paper tablet”, because the pages inside have large, rounded edges, which are reminiscent of a tablet when you look at in profile. I think there is room for the Smart Writing Set and its ilk: even though digital styli have gotten much better over the past few years, writing on glass still doesn’t feel natural, and it’s easier for me to jot something down in a notebook than to use my tablet or phone.
Of course, the Paper Tablet isn’t the only technologically packed instrument, as the Pen+ also has a built-in camera to stay on top of what the user creates and digitize it so that the app can recognize it.
This enables the smart pen to recognise its position on the page and notebook.
“The very idea of an analog/digital divide is passé”, Peter Jensen, Head of Digital Innovation at Moleskine, said in a statement.
The past years we’ve been seeing a curious hybrid of the analog and the digital, especially when it comes to journaling and note taking. When you’re ready, just tap the envelope icon on the page to digitize your note.
You can buy the Smart Writing Set on Moleskine’s site, Moleskine shops, and other select retail outlets worldwide.
‘On the other end we are well aware of all the advantages of digital, for editing, curating and sharing.
Ernest Hemingway, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature and shaped 20th century writing with the publication of seven novels, including “For Whom the Bell Tolls” wrote using a pencil or typewriter.

Mark Twain, who wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, designed his own notebooks, while Charles Dickens often wrote on blue paper in ink. My only complaint with the Pen+ is that it takes a moment to turn on automatically and start capturing my notes when I start writing, leading to a few dropped words from the start of the note when it’s transferred to the tablet.
