Nicklaus: Tiger isn’t done just yet

Defending champion Jordan Spieth is looking to become only the fourth player after Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Woods to successfully defend the green jacket following his record-breaking performance a year ago.

World No 4 Bubba Watson, a double victor at Augusta National, clinched the Northern Trust Open in February and his good friend, fifth-ranked fellow American Rickie Fowler, won the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January.

“I don’t think he’s done”, Nicklaus was saying Tuesday afternoon at Augusta National Golf Club, where he’ll make an appearance as honorary Masters starter Thursday morning.

And new world number one Jason Day can make it three tournament wins – and two majors – in succession after his triumph in the US PGA Championship last season and victories in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC-Dell Match Play last month.

“Bryson and I were talking about some of the science of an uphill putt and a downhill putt and the break and why it’s most from this point and that point and so forth”, Mickelson said.

World Golf Hall of Fame member Nancy Lopez stopped in the media center one day after she was honored at the 2016 Mayor’s Masters Reception. He won this tournament in 2012 and 2014 for his only two major championships in his career.

Dustin Johnson claimed three Top-10 finishes at majors in 2015, but trails at 20/1 on this year’s Masters odds, while Sweden’s Henrik Stenson has finished in the top three in his past two tournaments but is a long 25/1 bet to claim his first major tournament crown this week. He’s not here, and yet he is.

As he prepared for his 24th start, three-times Masters champion Phil Mickelson wished the injured Tiger Woods well, but also delivered a message for those such as his former nemesis who have been hindered by golf injuries. His game is made for this course.

They are all here, but Tiger is not, his body of work discussed in the past tense only, the strongest evidence to date that the era of Tiger is over.

“I don’t know if I have really sustained that form. What he did in that time span was unbelievable”. At least, the stars of present day golf admit that. “I mean, he did things that no one else could do”. “Hit it out of the rough, fairway bunkers, bunker shots”. It was just unbelievable what he could do as an athlete in our sport. For an explanation on why the Exchange is so good for golf betting scroll down. He got a little sniff [of victory] and he just took advantage of it. “We all just felt at times we were playing for second, that’s for sure”.

The amateur who surpasses all the ones Martin and I discussed, obviously, is Bobby Jones – the creator of this tournament and only golfer to win the Grand Slam in a single year back when the Slam consisted of two pro events and two amateur events.

“I’m probably not quite where they are, and I haven’t had the confidence of getting a win this year, but I feel like it’s close”. We all miss him and want him back. “That’s not the reality of it, but it went for such a long period of time that we thought it was”. “The tour misses him”. Instead, he’ll play nine holes, try to get off the course by 3 p.m., and head back to his rented house to relax.

The first checkpoint includes a jovial conversation about barbecue, the next features a lengthy apology from a security guard who doesn’t immediately recognize the 76-year old and at the final stop shows a sheriff telling Nicklaus he can go wherever he likes.

Woods announced late Friday that he was not ready to return to competition.
