Relay for Life Turns 10!

April 23: Citizen’s of Georgia Power’s Benefit Ride Killer Creek Harley-Davidson, 11480 Alpharetta Hwy, Roswell, 30076; Registration at 10 a.m.; pre-ride briefing at 10:40 a.m. and kick stands go up at 11 a.m.’ $25 per bike, $15 per passenger; cost includes guided tour through northern counties, live music, lunch and door prize ticket; all proceeds benefit Relay for Life of North Fulton/American Cancer Society. “With it being a high number, a lot of these events won’t hit the goal right before it. Because of the large number, it’s usually afterward”.

Student organizations and teams outside the UNC Charlotte community set up tables around the indoor track with food and games to raise money. Relay For Life events are community gatherings where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Teams raise funds in the months leading up to the event. Today, both women are cancer-free.

“We look forward to seeing all of you during Relay”.

East Lincoln’s event will begin with a kids walk and a team banner lap.

Eighteen participants in last year’s Relay For Life at Northern Highlands Regional High School proudly display the number of $73,911.31, the total amount raised last year during the 12-hour cancer fundraiser. The event’s traditional luminary service will continue for another year.

“It was a huge success and participants celebrated cancer survivors and carers, remembered those who we have lost to cancer and allowed those taking part to fight back against cancer and reduce their cancer risk”, Cancer Council NSW’s community relations co-ordinator for greater western Sydney, Georgia Cheyne, said.

In between, a fireworks show is scheduled to entertain the crowd.

Since 1991, ACS has contributed to a 20-percent decline in cancer death rates and a 50-percent drop in smoking rates, according to an ACS press release. A birthday bash hosted by Econofoods provided birthday cake and a special lap was taken while “Happy Birthday” was played for cancer survivors.
