A look at San Francisco’s paid parental leave

Local business groups and chambers of commerce often oppose policies like paid leave and raising the minimum wage, claiming that they will kill jobs or otherwise be bad for business.

His office said 12% of workers across the USA receive paid family leave through their employers. And a new leaked survey of business executives shows that the vast majority actually support laws requiring paid family leave.

California and New Jersey provide up to six weeks of partial pay, while Rhode Island offers four, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. In 2007, San Francisco officials required businesses to set aside money to be used toward employee health care, long before the federal government approved the Affordable Care Act. Generous leave packages are becoming a must among tech companies fighting for skilled recruits, with Twitter, Etsy, and Spotify all having announced new-and-improved policies, but not everybody works for a tech company. Our members recognise that while the addition of paid parental leave will come at a short-term expense to employers, it will yield a long-term financial and societal benefits.

This new San Francisco law comes at a time when both the White House and the Department of Labor are aggressively pushing more progressive parental leave policy via the “Lead on Leave’ campaign”. “We’re the only advanced country on Earth that doesn’t guarantee paid sick leave or paid maternity leave to our workers”. In December, Mayor Bill de Blasio of NY ordered that 20,000 nonunionized workers be given six weeks of fully paid parental leave, but that amounts to a small sliver of the total municipal workforce of around 300,000.
